About/Goals

This project addresses the negative effects fast fashion has on Bangladesh workers. Ranging from health and safety issues, endless working hours, and gender based violence. With this project, my goal is to ensure garment workers receive fair wages , decent working conditions, and proper treatment of women.

Health and Safety Issues

• Fashion items are dumped driectly into rivers. In Bangladesh alone, 22,000 tons of toxic waste from tanneries goes straight into waterways
• Employees usually work with no ventilation,breathing in toxic substances, and inhale fiber dust
• In 2013 Rana Plaza an eight-story complex in Bangladesh collpased and killed 1,138 workers
• Tarzeen Fashions industry took the lives of another 112 workers

Endless working hours / Lack of pay

• Many companies and people have not been paying their workers in Bangladesh, putting them and their families on the verge of starvation
• Garment workers are forced to work 14 to 16 hours a day, 7 days a week
• Their basic wages are so low that they can't refuse overtime
• Makes less than 39 cents a hour

Gender Based Violence

• Research found that 80% of garment workers in Bangladesh have either seen or been subjected to sexual violence and harassment in the workplace
• Woman make up more than 85% of apparel workers in Bangladesh
• Clothing workers regularly face verbal and physical abuse
• Some woman are not allowed to take tiolet breaks
